Preliminary Practice: Lens Flare

I want to include lens flaring shots in our music video. Here is an attempt I made. My phone’s camera quality does not capture it too well, but this was interesting to try. And when we record this on a DSLR, I’m sure the footage would turn out much better.

Weather Forecast

We have decided to start the shooting in the second week of January. According to the forecast, it is unlikely that our plans get disrupted due to the weather. Any inconvenience due to weather can be countered as we are planning to shoot most of the footage indoors.

More inspo for shots

Since our video ranges from light to dark colors and themes, we watched a few more videos together to brainstorm ideas for shots to make it more cinematic.  One thing that both of us really loved and want to replicate in our music video is the lens flaring shots. It looks very aesthetic and would work perfectly for some of our performance shots. Since one of our scenes is supposed to be in a ground'/field, we can shoot lens flaring shots there, creating an Anne with an E vibe.  Us watching Dhanak music video and admiring the lens flare shots.

Production schedule and shooting days

We plan on shooting during the second and third week of January. The final dates are not yet confirm because although I am available throughout, Zuha might go back to her hometown for winter break and this restricts us from finalizing the exact dates.

Treatment for the Music Video

Title: "Ribs" Genre: Alternative Pop Concept: The music video for "Ribs" by Lorde centers around the fleeting nature of youth, nostalgia, and the passage of time. The visual treatment captures the essence of the song, exploring themes of longing, freedom, and the bittersweet moments that define our youth. Setting: The video transitions between various settings that reflect the emotional journey of the protagonist, capturing both intimate and expansive scenes. The lighting is moody, with a focus on contrasting shadows to amplify the emotional depth. Visual Treatment: 0:37 - 0:48: Shots of different-colored lights shining, mirroring the hues of the lyrics. Visuals synchronize with the rhythm of the music. 0:48 - 1:02: Two friends, perhaps a mix of memories and present, lean on each other. They share a moment while listening to music ("Ribs") on a vintage cassette player, capturing the essence of nostalgia. 1:02 - 1:17: Protagonist (haya) sitting on the floo...

Shot Planning

Note: we intend to cut the first 36 seconds of the song, so it begins from 0:37 instead of 0:00. 0:37 - 0:48: different coloured lights shone by the galaxy projector. (Color switches with each "haa") 0:48 - 1:02: two girls leaning on each other, sharing wired earphones, listening to "Lover's Spit" (shown on laptop screen) 1:02 - 1:17: main character (Haya) sitting on the floor in an unfurnished room, captured by an orbiting shot, followed by a dolly-in closeup of her sad face.  1:17 - 1:25: both girls sharing a fur shawl and watching a movie. (Cutaways to performance/lipsyncing in a room with blue light). 1:25 - 1:32: Haya sitting alone with the fur shawl, watching a movie 1:32 - 1:50: a montage of both girls doing different activities like playing board games, laughing etc.  1:50 - 2:02: shows a bird-eye view of girl in bed, tossing and turning 2:02 - 2:09: girl sits up in bed 2:09 - 2:16: both girls holding hands, walking on the road 2:16 - 2:22: Haya (MC) s...

Target Audience Preferences

Image
Our target audience is supposed to be teenagers and young adults who tend to assume they are alone in their struggles with aging, loneliness and failure. However, these are all inevitable stages of our lives and Ribs by Lorde is a song that perfectly encapsulates that sensation and with its relatability, counters this sense of being alone. Here are some forms of media that according to statistics and my own observation are preferences of my target audience consisting of teenagers and young adults. Moreover, although our music promotional package is non-gender specific, however, females are certainly going to be more drawn to it.  TV Shows:  Video on Demand platforms such as Amazon Prime and Netflix have made TV shows very easily accessible for the youth. The shows that teenagers enjoy most tend to reflect characters that are also teenagers and figuring out life. A few examples of TV shows and how they inspire my music video for teenagers are listed below. Ginny and Geor...

Lip Syncing Practice

Lip syncing practice  We worked in a random group to record someone lip syncing in 2x speed to "A thousand years" by Christina Perri and then we were supposed to edit it to normal speed.  My group (Momina, Fatima, Maryam)

Discussing and Scheduling

Zuha and I had to schedule for the music video. This year, luckily, timing was no issue for me. But I also had to take Zuha and Haya's availability into consideration, as during winter break, Zuha would have to go to her hometown. And before that, Haya would not be available due to her mid year exams.

Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in setting the mood and tone of any music video.  This time, I invested in a galaxy projector for the music video, which has beautiful, mesmerizing projections in various colours.

characters I took inspiration from

Two females characters that reflect comforting friendship are Rory Gilmore and Lane Kim from Gilmore Girls, and in mise-en-scene, I took inspiration from their characters' bond.
