Target Audience Preferences

Our target audience is supposed to be teenagers and young adults who tend to assume they are alone in their struggles with aging, loneliness and failure. However, these are all inevitable stages of our lives and Ribs by Lorde is a song that perfectly encapsulates that sensation and with its relatability, counters this sense of being alone. Here are some forms of media that according to statistics and my own observation are preferences of my target audience consisting of teenagers and young adults. Moreover, although our music promotional package is non-gender specific, however, females are certainly going to be more drawn to it.

TV Shows:

Video on Demand platforms such as Amazon Prime and Netflix have made TV shows very easily accessible for the youth. The shows that teenagers enjoy most tend to reflect characters that are also teenagers and figuring out life. A few examples of TV shows and how they inspire my music video for teenagers are listed below.

Ginny and Georgia: It is a Netflix original show that follows an angsty teenager who moves around frequently with her mother and this show has been vastly welcomed by teenagers. When its second season aired, it took social media by a storm as all teenagers were hyped to express their opinions on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. However, the show has been heavily criticized by "GenZ" for its misleading portrayal of GenZ. Nevertheless, it has been one of the rare modern TV shows that has grasped a lot of young people. From this show, although I do not take inspiration from the characters' personalities, I do take inspiration from their styles. This is because it shows the appropriate outfits that teenagers wear instead of the exaggerated outfits in other shows, such as Euphoria.

Gilmore Girls: This show was aired first in October of 2000 on WB. However, it has resurfaced a few years ago and taken my generation by storm. Teenage girls in this age specifically are obsessed with the aesthetics of this show, the characters, the humour, and the friendships. I turned to Gilmore Girls for some of the costume inspirations, as Rory Gilmore, one of the main characters is a teenager famous for her adorable sweaters during her school years. I aspire to use white or light-blue sweaters in a few of the clips, as a tribute to the show. I am aware that this will be a boost to the promotion of the music video. This has also previously been observed when the creator of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" made her main character wear the "Rory Gilmore sweater" in one of the episodes and it took the internet by storm. Everyone was talking about it, posting and reposting a still from that scene. This satisfied the creator and she later confirmed that this was a deliberate tribute to Rory. Moreover, since our music video is supposed to revolve around innocent teenage friendship of two girls, Rory and her best friend Lane are an absolute inspiration in that regard.

I plan to use twin sweaters similar to this.

It has over 20000 comments.

One scene that I want to recreate in my MV.

Euphoria: Although I do not perceive Euphoria's portrayal of teenagers as appropriate, I do acknowledge that it has undeniably captured the interest of my target audiences. I believe one thing that plays a significant role in it is the lighting and color palette. Hence, I will be using Euphoria as an inspiration for the lighting and part of the color palette, as I know that it tends to attract teenagers.

Anne With an E: It is popular among teenage girls as it embraces youthfulness and wilderness, with abundance of female friendships among Anne, Diana and Ruby, and them running freely in fields. This inspires me to add a nature-related scene in my own music video, with the characters running in a field or something.

Movies:

Coming of age movies such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Little Women, and Dead poets society also reflect the preferences of my target audience.

Little Women: The 2019 version directed by Greta Gerwig has a non-chronological timeline. Since my music video flashes back and forth, I use this film as an inspiration. Moreover, it was adored by audiences of teenagers who saw themselves in the complicated characters such as Jo and Amy.

La La Land: The lighting in Seb's from La La Land added greatly to the emotional appeal of the movie and engaged greatly with the audiences. Here are a few inspirations that align with my vision.
