Moodboard

Image
I made a mood board based on our vision regarding the visuals of the music video.  It includes our intended lighting as well.

Equipment List and Budget

Camera:   I own a Canon EOS 750D, which we will use for recording the footage. Since it is already available and has a new SD card, we fortunately do not have to spend money on camera.  Tripod: I also own a tripod, so we will be using that for still, non-dynamic shots.  Lighting: I had already purchased a Galaxy Projector, that costed me around PKR 5000.  Travel costs: I would provide Zuha the transport, as we would leave from school together either directly to my house or somewhere nearby. However, she would have to manage her transport while returning.  Editing: The editing softwares I intend to use is Premiere Pro (2022), and CapCut for texts.

Costume and Props

Image
Costume The costumes for the music video are simple, yet diverse, ranging from pastels to white, black, and blue shirts, and the pants being either black or blue as well. The pastels will be worn by Haya during flashbacks, when her friend is still around, whereas the dark colors come in during the dreadful period of loneliness, reflecting Haya's state of mind.    The hair and makeup is also minimal and simple. However, in some of the scenes, her hair and makeup is disheveled and distorted, for example scrunchie loosely dangling and dark undereye makeup.  Haya (the main character) and I both own such matching sweaters. Therefore, I planned that in one of the scenes, preferably the bookshelf one, we would both wear it, to show an even deeper bond between the characters.  Props The props for this music video are also simple; board games, earphones, blankets, a birthday cake, books and a bookshelf, shawl and other minimal props that are readily available at my hous...

Casting

Image
Main Character: Since our soundtrack of selection is performed by Lorde, a female artist, our foremost requirement is a female. We intend to cast someone who is comfortable in front of a camera and able to give a range of expressions as well as lip sync well. I reached out to my cousin Haya, hoping she would agree to an audition. Our final choice for the music video is Haya Shoaib. She is ideal for this project because she is the appropriate age we were looking for and her Tiktok profile affirms her ability to be good at lip syncing, comfortable in front of the camera, and expressive.

Practicing Planned Shots

I watched one of my seniors' music video and was very inspired by the use of a rotating shot that dollies in. I loved the concept and showed it to Zuha, and she appreciated it to. I asked her to use the same shot for our own music video.  We decided to shoot it for practice.  If we use a gimble, the shot would be a lot more stable and give a cinematic look.

Song Analysis

Ribs is a song that a lot of young people develop an attachment to, as it encapsulates the anxiety of growing up, the warmth and comfort of friendships amidst the chaos, and the eerie loneliness that comes with growing up, as well as the fear of uncertainty of the future.  The mood of this song is blue and gloomy and the sped up repetition of the first verse in the prechorus perfectly captures the sense and feeling of anxiety. The bridge of the song displays a sense of relief and comfort by mentioning a close bond with a friend.  The drink you spilt all over me "Lover's Spit" left on repeat My mom and dad let me stay home It drives you crazy getting old We can talk it so good We can make it so divine We can talk it good How you wish it would be all the time The drink you spilt all over me "Lover's Spit" left on repeat My mom and dad let me stay home It drives you crazy getting old The drink you spilt all over me "Lover's Spit" left on repeat M...

Trends In Music Promotions

Social Media: In the age of new media, artists and production companies always utilize social media for the promotion of upcoming music. They do so by creating an engaging environment. This includes teasers and snippets, behind the scenes footage, and promotional content such as images on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok. Moreover, artists often turn to witty taglines or catchphrases that they caption these images with. This also extends to individualized trends. For example, when Taylor Swift was promoting her latest album Midnights, she would write short captions that were catchy lyrics, and she changed her instagram bio to "Meet me at midnight". This created a sense of buzzing excitement among her fans. She also started individualized trends such as "Midnights Mayhem with Me" in which everyday she would reveal one track title via Instagram reels.  YouTube Channel: Many artists have their own YouTube channels where they release the music ...
